Purple squirrel baffles experts A purple squirrel which appeared at a school has baffled experts who are unable to explain its colour. The Telegraph, 22nd December 2008 
"Teachers and pupils at Meoncross School in Stubbington, Hants, were amazed when they saw the creature through the window during a lesson. Since the squirrel, now nicknamed Pete, was first seen, it has become a regular fixture at the school but no one has been able to say whether the animal has fallen into purple paint, had a run-in with some purple dye, or whether there is another explanation. [...] "Its fur actually looks purple all the way through. It's an absolute mystery." Comment: Yes, our reality is really starting to morph.... more baffled experts? Alice in Wonderland time? Someone needs to catch this squirrel and check out it's DNA. It's no surprise the Chinese have taken a great interest, they are the world's no.1 hotspot for bizareness with even household cats growing wings.... Magnetic Field Hole Could Cripple Communications Fox News, 19th December 2008 
"Scientists have found two large leaks in Earth's magnetosphere, the region around our planet that shields us from severe solar storms. The leaks are defying many of scientists' previous ideas on how the interaction between Earth's magnetosphere and solar wind occurs: The leaks are in an unexpected location, let in solar particles in faster than expected and the whole interaction works in a manner that is completely the opposite of what scientists had thought. The findings have implications for how solar storms affect the our planet. Serious storms, which involved charged particles spewing from the sun, can disable satellites and even disrupt power grids on Earth." Comment: There is a MASSIVE HOLE in the roof of the world and it's just about to start raining heavily [Space Weather]. A Giant Breach in Earth's Magnetic Field NASA News, 16th December 2008 
NASA's five THEMIS spacecraft have discovered a breach in Earth's magnetic field ten times larger than anything previously thought to exist. Solar wind can flow in through the opening to "load up" the magnetosphere for powerful geomagnetic storms. But the breach itself is not the biggest surprise. Researchers are even more amazed at the strange and unexpected way it forms, overturning long-held ideas of space physics. [...] "This finding fundamentally alters our understanding of the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction. [...] "The opening was huge—four times wider than Earth itself," says Wenhui Li, a space physicist at the University of New Hampshire who has been analyzing the data. Li's colleague Jimmy Raeder, also of New Hampshire, says "10^27 particles per second were flowing into the magnetosphere—that's a 1 followed by 27 zeros. This kind of influx is an order of magnitude greater than what we thought was possible." [...] "We're entering Solar Cycle 24. For reasons not fully understood, CMEs in even-numbered solar cycles (like 24) tend to hit Earth with a leading edge that is magnetized north. Such a CME should open a breach and load the magnetosphere with plasma just before the storm gets underway. It's the perfect sequence for a really big event." Sibeck agrees. "This could result in stronger geomagnetic storms than we have seen in many years."" Comment: Gaia is letting down her defences to cosmic forces! It's now SHIELDS DOWN! Here it seems the Earth's magnetic field is not providing the expected defence against Space Weather, but instead opening up a HUGE hole to space weather thereby accelerating evolutionary change. The date of this discovery in June 2007 during solar minimum, is particularly interesting as that coincides with metaphysical predictions of a MASSIVE exponential increase in evolutionary energies.... Boundary Between Earth's Upper Atmosphere And Space Has Moved To Extraordinarily Low Altitudes, NASA Instruments Document Science Daily, 16th December 2008 
"Observations made by NASA instruments onboard an Air Force satellite have shown that the boundary between the Earth's upper atmosphere and space has moved to extraordinarily low altitudes. These observations were made by the Coupled Ion Neutral Dynamics Investigation (CINDI) instrument suite, which was launched aboard the U.S. Air Force's Communication/Navigation Outage Forecast System (C/NOFS) satellite on April 16, 2008. [...] CINDI's first discovery was, however, that the ionosphere was not where it had been expected to be. During the first months of CINDI operations the transition between the ionosphere and space was found to be at about 260 miles (420 km) altitude during the nighttime, barely rising above 500 miles (800 km) during the day. These altitudes were extraordinarily low compared with the more typical values of 400 miles (640 km) during the nighttime and 600 miles (960 km) during the day. Comment: The ionosphere can be compared to the Earth's skin providing us with some protection against direct cosmic influences, so it seems this is another layer of Earth's defence that is 'evaporating'. Certainly, with the numerous atmospheric and geomagnetic changes taking place, there can be no doubt, that all life on Earth will be getting a thorough cosmic inspection. Lightning-Storm Gamma Rays Could Harm Air Travelers Wired Science, 15th December 2008 
"SAN FRANCISCO, California — The most energetic particles in the electromagnetic spectrum could pose a danger to commercial airline passengers. About every 3000 hours of flying time, a plane is hit with a bolt of lightning. Recently, spacecraft have found gamma rays can be created by thunder storms, and according to new research presented at the American Geophysical Union annual meeting this week, the rays could be intense enough to cause radiation sickness. "Everywhere we look, we're seeing x-rays and gamma rays flying out of thunderstorms and lightning," said Joseph Dwyer, a physicist at the Florida Institute of Technology and lead author of the study. "The gamma rays coming out of thunderstorms are so intense we can measure these 600 kilometers away and so bright that it almost blinds the spacecraft." Comment: Airline passengers could start getting radiation sickness? In my book Tuning the Diamonds, I wrote a section called "Extreme Physics Right here on Earth", but at that time, scientists were only prepared to tell us that gamma-rays from Terrestrial Gamma Ray Flashes (TGFs) were being launched into space from the Earth's upper atmosphere, maybe something has changed in the short period from reports back in February 2005. "The activist group Environmental Defense got a taste of what it used to dish out this week when its Washington, D.C., offices were invaded by another green group, the Global Justice Ecology Project. The Global Justice Ecology Project (GJEP) essentially accused Environmental Defense (ED) of collaborating with the enemy -- big businesses that want cap-and-trade global warming legislation. Noting that her father was one of ED's founders, GJEP head Rachel Smolker said she was now "ashamed" of ED because it advocated cap-and-trade. Smolker said that the European version of cap-and-trade, the Kyoto Protocol, had "utterly failed" to reduce emissions and served "only to provide huge profits for the world's most polluting industries." [...] "Instead of protecting the environment, ED now seems primarily concerned with protecting corporate bottom lines. I can hear my father rolling over in his grave," Smolker said. The GJEP activists who took over ED's offices rearranged the furniture to illustrate how cap-and-trade is "like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic," and sported signs that read "Keep the cap, ditch the trade" and "Carbon trading is an environmental offense." "Want to quickly improve your happiness and satisfaction with life? Then the pen may be a mighty weapon, according to research done by Kent State University's Dr. Steven Toepfer." ...Toepfer enlisted students from six courses to explore the effects of writing letters of gratitude to people who had positively impacted the students' lives. Over the course of a six-week period, students wrote one letter every two weeks with the simple ground rules that it had to be positively expressive, required some insight and reflection, were nontrivial and contained a high level of appreciation or gratitude. After each letter, students completed a survey to gauge their moods, satisfaction with life and feelings of gratitude and happiness. "I saw their happiness increase after each letter, meaning the more they wrote, the better they felt," says Toepfer, who also witnessed improvement in participants' life satisfaction and gratitude throughout the study. "The most powerful thing in our lives is our social network. It doesn't have to be large, and you don't always need to be the life of the party, but just having one or two significant connections in your life has shown to have terrific psychological and physical benefits." "Sometimes, words fail me in describing the absolute disregard of the placement of NOAA official climate monitoring sites. For example, this one in Clarinda, Iowa submitted by surfacestations volunteer Eric Gamberg:" "For those of you that don't know, this station is located at the wastewater treatment plant there. I've written many times about the placement of stations at WWTP's being a bad idea due to the localized heat bubble that is created due to all the effluent coming though. The effect is especially noticeable in winter. Often you'll see steam/water vapor in the air around these sites in winter, and more than one COOP observer has told our volunteers that snow sometimes does not stick to the ground at WWTP's. The larger pole appears to be a gas burnoff torch for excess methane. I can't say how often it is activated (note the automatic ignitor circuit on the pole) but I can tell you that putting an official NOAA climate thermometer within a few feet of such a device is one of the worst examples of thoughtless station placement on the part of NOAA I've ever seen." Comment: Another classic in the series, but when will the details of this mismanagement hit the mainstream? This defintion provided by Pierre Gosselin (08:11:04), just about sums up the situation; "The United States Historical Climatology Network (USHCN) is a ship-shod, positive-biased data set of daily and monthly records of easy-to-manipulate meteorological variables from over 1000 poorly sited observing stations across the 48 contiguous getting hotter United States." But, apparently it's the best network of it's kind in the world.... Cat gives birth to freak feline with two faces The Times Online, 20th November 2008 
"A vet got more than he bargained for when a cat he was helping in labour gave birth to a two-headed kitten in Western Australia. Veterinarian George Huber and nurse Louisa Burgess had to do a double take when the grey and white freak feline was born with two faces." It was born at the Swan Veterinary Clinic in Perth, Western Australia, when its mother was brought in after suffering complications during birth." Comment: I have quite a collection now of animals with this DNA mutation, cows, pigs, cats and even a human baby with two faces. Now, I am wondering how long it will take scientists and the mainstream press to start speculating in the media that this might be due to the increase in galactic cosmic radiation hitting our planet. "The surface of the largest known 'plutoid' appears to have changed in recent years, according to new measurements of how elements are layered on its icy surface. But astronomers cannot explain the cause of the apparent change. Eris is the largest known object beyond the orbit of Neptune, weighing nearly a third more than Pluto. It travels on an elongated path around the Sun that takes about 560 years to complete. [...] Eris is now near its farthest point from the Sun, so it is expected to be cold and inactive. But a new study suggests the dwarf planet's surface may have changed in the last few years. "We're really scratching our heads," says author Stephen Tegler of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. [...] One possibility is that Eris experienced some recent change in weather that altered the top several centimetres of its surface, Tegler says. But changes in weather are difficult to explain when Eris is so far from the Sun. "It's very hard to imagine that something that dramatic would be happening on a relatively short time scale", says Mike Brown of Caltech, who was not involved in the study." Comment: Another example of the rapid planetary changes taking place across the whole of our solar system effecting all the planets and even objects like this plutoid Eris. "A town was cut off by floodwater yesterday after torrential overnight storms - which caused 6ft high drifts of hailstones. More than 100 people were evacuated from their homes in Ottery St Mary, Devon, and 25 were airlifted to safety or rescued by firefighters. Cars were buried up to their roofs in hailstones and the freezing conditions caused floodwater to form treacherous icy patches, causing dozens of car accidents." Comment: Well, there have been amazing pictures of cars buried in hail in Bogota, Colombia, but to see this in the UK is incredible. The atmospheric conditions must have been extreme to permit this volume of hail to develop and then be dumped in a small area. Will smoke and mirrors shield us from the global warming threat? "Backers of extreme technologies to curb global warming advocate dumping iron dust into the seas or placing smoke and mirrors in the sky to dim the sun. But even though they are seen by some as cheap fixes for climate change when many nations are worried about economic recession, such "geo-engineering" proposals have to overcome wide criticism that they are fanciful and can have unforeseen side effects. [...] Other proposals reviewed by the UN panel include installing a metallic screen covering a 106km² patch of space 1.5 million kilometres away from Earth in the direction of the sun. The 3 000-ton structure could be put in place over 100 years by 100 space shuttle flights. "The cost has yet to be determined," said the panel." Comment: NASA have informed the world that we are now more exposed to galactic cosmic rays and the phenomena of Space Weather, which some scientists have dared to claim actually effects weather on Earth. It seems obvious, that this is the real reason for the panic. OK, it is possible to surmise that we have entrepeneurs desperate to find an idea that will sell and they may or may not get these extreme ideas funded. Yet, there must be considerably disquiet amongst the more astute academics, who know that the paleoclimatic evidence clearly demonstrates that climatic changes are always accompanied by extinction events and evolutionary change. "Since 6.30pm on Wednesday, The Evening Telegraph has been inundated with calls and e-mails from readers who saw a strange fireball cutting a swath across the heavens for several minutes." "The most likely explanation, according to RAF Wittering-based Met Office weather forecaster and keen astronomer Julian Cooke, is that it was an "unusually large" meteor." "Another astronomer, 38-year-old Jason Hart, of Orton Brimbles, Peterborough, reckons the spectacle could also have been an "iridium flare" – when the light of the sun hits reflective surfaces on satellites orbiting the earth, creating a streak of bright, white light. But if the accounts of regulars and staff at the Dragon pub in Werrington are to be believed, the phenomenon was more in keeping with Mr Cooke's fireball explanation. Pub manager Janek Skutela said: "It looked like a bright orange ball, and about 20 of us went outside the pub to watch it after one regular came in and said he could see a UFO. "At first it shot across the sky really fast but then it went really slowly before disappearing into the distance. All in all it lasted about seven or eight minutes. "We couldn't work out what it was but there were reports of a similar thing happening a fortnight before. One of our customers saw it but didn't say anything because he was scared everyone would take the mickey out of him."" Comment: Well it's all happening in the UK! So here we have the new phenomena of an "unusually large" fireball shooting across the sky, and then slowing down to go about it's business at a more leisurely pace! I think we have another example of the arrival of a magnetospheric plasmoid and the general public have no idea because this would most certainly upset the prevailing understanding of reality! "While a pink sky at night might be a shepherd's delight, London residents were left scratching their heads last night as a mysterious pink cloud drifted over the city. Bemused bystanders in Mayfair craned their necks to witness the strange alien-like cloud that appeared for just under an hour at around 8:30pm. It hovered over buildings before breaking up and slowly disappearing." Comment: Nice pictures. I think this is another example of "old energy" that have been forced out of the Earth as part of the massive cleanse now taking place worldwide. The pink is reminiscent of the one of the colours seen in the upside rainbow clouds that occurred just before the massive Sichuan Earthquake in China, see YouTube video (3:23)30 mins before the 2008 Sichuan earthquake in China. Earth In Midst Of Sixth Mass Extinction: 50% Of All Species Disappearing ScienceDaily.com, 21st October 2008 
"The Earth is in the midst of the sixth mass extinction of both plants and animals, with nearly 50 percent of all species disappearing, scientists say. Because of the current crisis, biologists at UC Santa Barbara are working day and night to determine which species must be saved. Their international study of grassland ecosystems, with flowering plants, is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences." Comment: Evolutionary biologists are well aware that evolutionary change is underway, but usually they blame it on pollution or global warming. What this report does not mention is that the evidence shows that the pace of evolutionary change is accelerating and some changes are being recorded in decades not hundreds of thousands of years as scientists have taught. "The number of climate change skeptics is growing rapidly. Because a funny thing is happening to global temperatures -- they're going down, not up.""...weather-satellite scientists David Douglass of the University of Rochester and John Christy of the University of Alabama at Huntsville nonetheless dealt the True Believers a devastating blow last month. For nearly 30 years, Professor Christy has been in charge of NASA's eight weather satellites that take more than 300,000 temperature readings daily around the globe. In a paper co-written with Dr. Douglass, he concludes that while manmade emissions may be having a slight impact, "variations in global temperatures since 1978 ... cannot be attributed to carbon dioxide." Comment: Lorne Gunter is a longstanding global warming dissenter who is delighted that global temperatures are going 'poof'. Here he points out that many more prominent scientists are publicly denouncing the extremely dubious science that blames CO2 for global warming and the even more startling data that shows declining global temperatures. Unlike the ground based temperature measurements, that in some quarters are now considered laughable, NASA's weather satellite measurements are deemed to be highly accurate and so many are starting to warn that global cooling is now most certainly inevitable, to the chagrin of Al Gore et al. 2008 tornado season could blow away records USA Today, 13th October 2008 
"The 2008 tornado season is on track to set a record for the number of tornadoes in the USA, according to National Weather Service data. Through July, 1,390 tornadoes were officially recorded in the first seven months of a year — the most ever. The annual record for tornadoes in the USA is 1,817, set in 2004. "This year, every month has been above average for tornadoes," says Greg Forbes, of the Weather Channel." Comment: The high tornado count is highly symtomatic of the chaotic electromagnetic environment and simply does nor represent the result of clashes of hot moist air and cold air often cited by scientists. Since global mean temperatures have declined, theory suggests that tornadoes should decline too, but obviously there are other factors at play that are giving us an increase in tornadoes and some in places that have rarely experienced them before. However, if you want the conventional rebuttal, here is the opinion of Professor Tim Ball, Tornadoes not a sign of global warming. "All barn owls are precious, but none more than this jet-black two year old. Sable has melanism - a 100,000-to-one gene mutation that makes her the opposite to an albino. [...] Strangely, Sable is much stronger than a normal barn owl whereas an albino is weaker and has a bad immune system. However, if she got out into the wild she'd be dead in 12 hours. You would think black would work at night but in reality she would be mobbed and killed by other owls." Comment: I am happy to report another example of a rare mutation and I suggest that there will be many more to come as part of the evolutionary change now gripping this planet. "NASA's David Hathaway just recently updated his solar cycle prediction and has pushed cycle 24 into the future a little more once again. Though to read his latest update on 10/03/08 at his prediction page here, you wouldn't know it, because the page is mostly tech speak and reviews of semi relevant papers." "This isn't the first time NASA has moved the goalpost. Back in March I did a story on NASA moving the goal post then, and since then they've moved the cycle ahead twice, once in April and again now in October." Comment: The Sun is perplexing ALL the experts! Back to the Dark Ages: National Grid raises the spectre of blackouts this winter Daily Mail, 26th September 2008 
"Homes could be plunged into darkness this winter as the nation faces the shocking prospect of power cuts. The warning, following the release of grim industry figures yesterday, will dredge up memories of the last electricity crisis in 1974." Comment: There is a strong likelihood of power cuts caused by solar activity if and when solar cycle 24 starts to ramp up, but this article just explains that the UK's grid infrastructure is suffering from "low capacity" due to lack of investment and environmental constraints. However, we still have no explanation for what happened in May when, "half a million customers were hit by power cuts after a series of unexpected problems at power stations forced the National Grid to conserve supplies." So I have to wonder why there is a reticence to explain what exactly caused that particular shutdown. Ulysses Reveals Global Solar Wind Plasma Output At 50-Year Low NASA News, 23rd September 2008 
"WASHINGTON -- Data from the Ulysses spacecraft, a joint NASA-European Space Agency mission, show the sun has reduced its output of solar wind to the lowest levels since accurate readings became available. The sun's current state could reduce the natural shielding that envelops our solar system. [...] "Galactic cosmic rays carry with them radiation from other parts of our galaxy," said Ed Smith, NASA's Ulysses project scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "With the solar wind at an all-time low, there is an excellent chance the heliosphere will diminish in size and strength. If that occurs, more galactic cosmic rays will make it into the inner part of our solar system." Comment: It's official, Earth's shielding against Space Weather is dropping quickly. The New Cosmic Age has arrived! Well, if the Universe was going to take the opportunity to blast our planet with galactic cosmic rays, it seems that our defenses are well and truly down to do anything much about it. "Some shifts in climate may have been gradual, but events such as the YDE ['Younger Dryas Event'] or the MCA ['Medieval Climate Anomaly'] and the LIA ['Little Ice Age'] were much more rapid. Responses to climate change have included changes in geographical distributions, shifts in community composition and extinction. Species which are extant today have in the past been organized into communities that have no modern counterparts. Regional bio-diversity has seen marked changes in response to shifts in climate. In addition to these ecological responses, which are expected in the case of large-scale habitat changes and climate warming, there is also evidence that species have responded with genotypic and phenotypic shifts in the face of Quaternary climatic change. Such evolutionary responses should also be anticipated in the future." Comment: These scientists are telling us that abrupt climate changes have happened in the past and the evidence shows that species have responded by rapid evolutionary change. Guess what? It's about to happen again and the inhabitants of Earth are largely unprepared because this time, the bar is being reset to facilitate a higher level of consciousness. This helps to explain why there is so much panic in certain quarters, because it will be change that will be impossible to control. Solar Wind Loses Power, Hits 50-year Low NASA News, 23rd September 2008 
Summary: "In a briefing today at NASA headquarters, solar physicists announced that the solar wind is losing power. "The average pressure of the solar wind has dropped more than 20% since the mid-1990s," says Dave McComas of the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas. "This is the weakest it's been since we began monitoring solar wind almost 50 years ago." [...] Curiously, the speed of the million mph solar wind hasn't decreased much—only 3%. The change in pressure comes mainly from reductions in temperature and density. The solar wind is 13% cooler and 20% less dense. "What we're seeing is a long term trend, a steady decrease in pressure that began sometime in the mid-1990s," explains Arik Posner, NASA's Ulysses Program Scientist in Washington DC. [...] "The solar wind isn't inflating the heliosphere as much as it used to," says McComas. "That means less shielding against cosmic rays." In addition to weakened solar wind, "Ulysses also finds that the sun's underlying magnetic field has weakened by more than 30% since the mid-1990s," says Posner. "This reduces natural shielding even more." Unpublished Ulysses cosmic ray data show that, indeed, high energy (GeV) electrons, a minor but telltale component of cosmic rays around Earth, have jumped in number by about 20%. These extra particles pose no threat to people on Earth's surface. Our thick atmosphere and planetary magnetic field provide additional layers of protection that keep us safe. [...] Also, there are controversial studies linking cosmic ray fluxes to cloudiness and climate change on Earth. That link may be tested in the years ahead. Comment: The Terms and Conditions for Living on Planet Earth Have Changed! The "quality control inspection" is about to start in earnest! The statement about "no threat to people on Earth's surface", is rather misleading and does not take into account the DNA mutations that will be passed down from generation to generation. (Scientific FACT). Metaphysical sources are warning people to protect their energy fields and if you are familiar with my assessment and conclusions, you will know that the energy bombardment is from many different sources. So, it seems the writer Dr. Tony Phillips has realised that with the Earth receiving less and less protection, we will all be soon facing increased cosmic radiation. The big question has to be: Is your energy field ready to cope? "A road rage driver was burned to death after ramming another vehicle and setting her own car on fire by furiously revving her engine, it emerged today. Serena Sutton-Smith, 54, had deliberately driven into the back of Paula Small's stationary car and then refused to get out of her Vauxhall Nova as she sat with her foot on the accelerator. For other greenhouse gases, it's up to thousands of years. Current theory on how long we have to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions before triggering potentially devastating climate change is about 50 years. Given that, the argument you can eliminate the harm caused by cumulative carbon emissions today by paying a third party to theoretically lower them tomorrow, is both absurd and irrelevant." Comment: Well actually, if you put it like that, it does sound like a good idea! LOL!! Seriously, I realised that carbon offsetting was a complete joke when I found out that the founder of Greenpeace had set up a website that allowed people to buy carbon credits to offset their pets flatutlence. It is quite clear to me that carbon offsetting is along the lines of many stock market manias like investing in tulip bulbs in the 1630s, or the South sea Bubble in 1720s or more recently investing in any internet company at the time of the dot-com boom. UFO expert Nick Pope, who previously worked for the Ministry of Defence, stated "Given the sheer number of sightings we've seen this summer and the unprecedented number of photos and videos, it's time for a full public inquiry." I tend to focus on what appears to be the orbs being sighted all over the UK at the moment and I have to wonder why specifically the UK, because I don't know of a good reason, accept for the fact that the country may need a serious refresh of energy. Anyway, unless I obtain information that tells me different, I believe that our whole planet is experiencing a massive refresh of energy, literally like you would wipe a hard disk and start again. This means that there is a lot of traffic with plasma "magnetic entities" literally 'information carriers' moving in and out of our atmosphere and the ground we walk on. "Their article breaks new ground in opening up for academic debate the way in which evidence of UFOs has not been seriously analyzed in the modern era. Their main argument is that this is due to a "metaphysical threat" that UFOs pose to the sovereignty of modern states. This threat comes not from the reality of UFOs as an inexplicable physical phenomenon that ultimately have mundane explanations, but the implicit assumption that UFOs are intelligently guided vehicles controlled by extraterrestrial intelligences (the extraterrestrial hypothesis). "The Automated Transfer Vehicle, Europe's ISS logistics spacecraft, was used to perform its first debris avoidance manoeuvre for the International Space Station. The manoeuvre was started yesterday at 18:11 CEST (16:11 UT) and finished 5 minutes 2 seconds later. In the current Station configuration the Automated Transfer Vehicle(ATV), which is docked to the aft end of the Russian Zvezda Service module at the back of the Station, is the only vehicle that can carry out this kind of manoeuvre. The way to avoid space debris, which in this case comes from an old satellite, is by performing a so-called retrograde manoeuvre of the Space Station, i.e. by slowing it down, which in turn lowers its orbiting altitude. " Comment: So, the ISS has measures to avoid being hit by the junk that surrounds this planet, is that really such an impressive feat? I would be more impressed if they could find a way of clearing up the junk. So, now that NASA are reassuring us that we are still on for celestial fireworks in solarcycle 24, it might be interesting to watch the ISS dodge one bullet after another as satellites die and spin out of control after getting hit by space weather. Full Report: "Tom cats in Sichuan province in southern China have sprouted wing-like growths on their backs, which locals are attributing to the hot summer weather and the romantic attentions of females. One animal started to develop the "wings" during a period of hot weather in Sichuan, a large province in southern China where a devastating earthquake struck this spring. Although the growths appear fluffy, they contain bone. But veterinary experts say that despite the hard inner core, the flaps do not harm the cat's quality of life or safety. Several animals were photographed with the furry protuberances by a local newspaper photographer. "At first they were just two bumps, but they started to grow quickly, and after a month there were two wings," said one cat's owner, who was only identified as Feng. "Many female cats in heat came to harass him, and then the wings started to grow," she told the local Huashang News. Although Feng attributed her pet's condition to the stress of a feline love life and the hot Sichuan summer. However, scientists said the wings had a less romantic explanation. In fact, the hairy growths probably developed because of unusual grooming habits, a genetic defect or a hereditary skin condition." Comment: It seems that more cats in China are now morphing and developing wings and the report in May 2007 Cat grows wings, was the first of the crop. "Komodo dragons have been eating a lot of people in Indonesia lately and the locals blame environmentalists, as reported by Yaroslav Trofimov at the Wall Street Journal (a subscription is required; or borrow or buy today’s paper). Apparently, in Indonesia, people used to hunt deer and leave portions of successful hunts to the komodo dragons. They also used to tie up goats as sacrifices. All of this pleased the dragons, which left the humans alone. Then entered the Environmentalists from the Nature Conservancy, who sought and were awarded a ban on deer hunting. They also had dogs declared an "alien species", thus outlawing them. Naturally, being sympathetic souls, they also got a ban on goat offerings. The reason they did all this, according to Widodo Ramono, the policy director of the environmentalist organization, was because he feared the komodo was becoming "domesticated." But, even though all the people in this group were no doubt armed with many letters after their names, each with multiple "studies" in hand, they forgot that the dragons had to eat. So the dragons started wandering down to the villages and learned how tasty villagers and the villagers' livestock were. "Today the dragons are angry with us," says villager Hajji Faisal, "and see us an enemies." A man named Jamain, whose son was eaten, said "I don’t blame the dragons for my boy’s death. I blame those who forbade us from following custom and feeding them. If it weren't for them, my boy would still be alive." Comment: Great headline! "This report, that there's nothing to report, is newsworthy because of a growing buzz in lay and academic circles that something is wrong with the sun. Sun Goes Longer Than Normal Without Producing Sunspots declared one recent press release. A careful look at the data, however, suggests otherwise. [...] Hathaway has studied international sunspot counts stretching all the way back to 1749 and he offers these statistics: "The average period of a solar cycle is 131 months with a standard deviation of 14 months. Decaying solar cycle 23 (the one we are experiencing now) has so far lasted 142 months--well within the first standard deviation and thus not at all abnormal. The last available 13-month smoothed sunspot number was 5.70. This is bigger than 12 of the last 23 solar minimum values." In summary, "the current minimum is not abnormally low or long." The longest minimum on record, the Maunder Minimum of 1645-1715, lasted an incredible 70 years." "What is so surprising is that rapid, almost sudden, changes take place in the Earth's magnetic field," said study co-author Nils Olsen, a geophysicist at the Danish National Space Center in Copenhagen. [...] The decline in the magnetic field also is opening Earth's upper atmosphere to intense charged particle radiation, scientists say. Satellite data show the geomagnetic field decreasing in the South Atlantic region, Mandea said, adding that an oval-shaped area east of Brazil is significantly weaker than similar latitudes in other parts of the world. "It is in this region that the shielding effect of the magnetic field is severely reduced, thus allowing high energy particles of the hard radiation belt to penetrate deep into the upper atmosphere to altitudes below a hundred kilometers (62 miles)," Mandea said. This radiation does not influence temperatures on Earth. The particles, however, do affect technical and radio equipment and can damage electronic equipment on satellites and airplanes, Olsen of the Danish space center said."" Whether or not this is a sign of global warming, the turbulence does seem to be spawning new spots. As Red Spot Jr. and the Great Red Spot approach a June conjunction, a new third spot may merge with the GRS in August." Comment: I think a better interpretation is that new spots on Jupiter are a sign of massive planetary change and can be compared to similar changes in all the planets in our solar system. "Can clouds predict earthquakes? YouTube has footage of strange multicoloured clouds seen just before the recent earthquake struck Sichuan province in China. The first impression is of a rainbow smeared on to small scraps of clouds, a phenomenon best known in a circumzenithal halo. This is created when sunlight shines through cirrus clouds full of tiny hexagonal ice crystals shaped like plates. The crystals behave like glass prisms, splitting the light into a bow with the colours of the spectrum, often brighter than a rainbow. But one puzzle is that the colours in the Chinese clouds were upside down from a normal circumzenithal halo – red pointing towards the horizon and blue towards the Sun, instead of the other way round." The paper concludes: "Numerous palaeoclimatic observations, covering a wide range of time scales, suggest that galactic cosmic ray variability is associated with climate change. The quality and diversity of the observations make it difficult to dismiss them merely as chance associations. But is the GCR flux directly affecting the climate or merely acting as a proxy for variations of the solar irradiance or a spectral component such as UV? Here, there is some palaeoclimatic evidence for associations of the climate with geomagnetic and galactic modulations of the GCR [Galactic Cosmic Ray] flux, which, if confirmed, point to a direct GCR-climate forcing. Moreover, numerous studies have reported meteorological responses to short-term changes of cosmic rays or the global electrical current, which are unambiguously associated with ionising particle radiation." Excerpt: Antarctica hasn't warmed as much over the last century as climate models had originally predicted, a new study finds. […] Monaghan and his team found that while climate models projected temperature increases of 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit (0.75 degrees Celsius) over the past century, temperatures were observed to have risen by only 0.4 F (0.2 C)." "Many animals can sense the Earth's magnetic field, so why not people, asks Oleg Shumilov of the Institute of North Industrial Ecology Problems in Russia. Shumilov looked at activity in the Earth's geomagnetic field from 1948 to 1997 and found that it grouped into three seasonal peaks every year: one from March to May, another in July and the last in October. Surprisingly, he also found that the geomagnetism peaks matched up with peaks in the number of suicides in the northern Russian city of Kirovsk over the same period." The theory comes after two distinctive cloud formations were observed above an active fault in Iran, each before two large earthquakes occurred. According to the New Scientist, geophysicists Guangmeng Guo and Bin Wang of Nanyang Normal University in Henan, China, noticed a gap in the clouds in satellite images from December 2004 that exactly matched the location of the main fault in southern Iran." Comment: Yes, according to other research, low frequency emissions can be detected in the ionosphere as "bright spots" and can provide some kind of warning of an impending earthquake. However, in previous reserarch, timescales have been in a matter of days. Two residents have contacted the Guardian saying they saw a strange object flying through the sky last weekend above the Winston Churchill statue on Woodford Green. "There are many possible explanantions for such sightings, whether it is aircraft, ballons or other similar objects."
